I have never had the need to workout to keep in shape when I was younger (bless my folks for those genes), but I have, in the last year or two, discovered how much I loved exercising. Perhaps it's the daunting stare-down of my 30th birthday that is approaching way too fast. Or maybe it's just for the sheer fact that I have been putting on weight... But I have gotten off my lazy arse, worked it hard and I love it. In fact, I can't stop.
You know I took up poledancing a little more than a year ago. I still try to go at least once a week (usually two) and if anything, I have grown to love the sport even more now. Come costochondritis, or a sprain ankle, nothing is keeping me off my pole. Now I have a new obsession.
Just this week, Steve, Cheryl, James and I started boxing. Not actually sparring, contact boxing - I'd be in a hospital by now - but kind of a boxercise programme that's put together by Steve (bless you). We all bought gloves and pads and hand wraps. I tell you, we look pretty damn cool with our gear on.
Now, we all know how people can procrastinate when it comes to working hard. However, recently there is this health-wave going on and the people around me all started going on exercise regimes and diets. Yes, the sort of thingus slightly older people tend to do, because we don't spend every waking moment planning a party or clubbing. The four of us should be given huge pats on our backs because we said we wanted to box and we got started almost right away.
James offered up the exercise studio at his condo and we all got together last Tuesday for our first session. Steve printed out drills at each station and pasted them on the mirrors. Special mention here for Pete - thank you for being our official timer!!! I suspect Pete really is just there for the post-boxing drinks, but you are really important to us! Hopefully you'll join us one day. Anyway, we were unbelievably motivated. After that first two-hour class, we were hooked. Today, we had our second session.
The great thing about this whole very impromptu get-together is discovering how motivational it is to have your mates urge you on and high-fiving you after. I wouldn't trade this group for another. The best part about working your arse off with people you like? You slave away, have fun, fool around and go for drinks after.
Just tonight, we had enough laughs to make me smile for a week. You guys are amazing. You have given me something to look forward to every Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I can't wait to don my boxing gloves again.
*endorphins overload*
And now that I am living healthier, I'm trying to improve my diet as well. After all, can't let all that hard work go to waste. I've already stopped smoking for a while (woohoo!). I am trying to eat only whole foods, no processed foods. It's really hard, but I am trying. And I am incorporating a lot more vegetables into my diet. I only hope all this effort will pay off. Gimme a hot body, please!!!!
